Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit”

So, anyone else get the living daylights scared out of them by this video when they were a kid? This video was creepier to me than most horror movies. Still, it’s some great work with robots.

Here’s a brief behind-the-scenes look:

  1. Oh sweet mercy, YES THIS TERRIFIED THE BEJABBERS OUT OF ME.

It’s excellent robot work, but the imagery is really very odd and creepy to me, even today. It definitely leaves an impression! I can’t listen to the song (which is great, BTW) without thinking of those disembodied legs walking around, among other things.

(I was also unsettled by Tom Petty’s “Don’t Come Around Here No More” video, especially the cake part, but “Rockit” tops Tom in the Creepy Childhood Memories category for me. XD)

  2. BTW, if memory serves correctly, Herbie Hancock performed this same song on “Saturday Night Live” back in the 80s. Same episode with guest host Ringo Starr! 😉
